Vincent is the story of Vincent van Gogh, told through the eyes of his brother Theo, a few days after the death of the little-known painter. Rumors about Vincent are flying in Paris. Some say he was a penniless madman, a frequenter of prostitutes, a derelict and soon to be forgotten artist of trifling quality. Others denounce him as a wayward priest and a foreigner. Many whisper he took his own life in a moment of insanity. His brother Theo, Vincent's confidante and lifelong supporter, is enraged. Tonight, he hopes to set the record straight.
Adapted from over 500 letters between Vincent and Theo, a personal, passionate, and often unknown side of the artist is revealed. Correspondence between the two brothers shows the struggles of a self-doubting artist whose romantic and creative endeavors are misunderstood. Underscored by a visual accompaniment of slides of van Gogh's work, the play is a dramatized art history seminar brought to life by the personal narrative of the family member who enabled both the development and the unconventional lifestyle of a brilliant artist.
